Saint Joseph Đặng Đình Viên (also Joseph Ðặng Văn Viên) (born c. 1787 in Tiên Chu, Hưng Yên province, Vietnam – died August 21, 1838, in Bảy Mẫu, Vietnam) was a priest, a Dominican tertiary, a martyr, and a saint of the Catholic Church. Joseph Đặng Đình Viên was born in Tiên Chu, Hưng Yên province. He studied Latin and theology under the guidance of European missionaries. He was ordained a priest in 1821 and subsequently served in various parishes. Joseph Đặng Đình Viên became a Dominican tertiary. His brother and nephew reported him to the authorities. He was arrested on August 1, 1838. Despite being tortured repeatedly, he could not be forced to renounce his faith. He was beheaded on August 21, 1838. His feast day is November 24, as part of the group of 117 Vietnamese Martyrs. He was beatified on May 27, 1900, by Pope Leo XIII and canonized by Pope John Paul II on June 19, 1988, as one of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs.
