Biography
Guillaume Tempier (or William III) was Bishop of Poitiers in the 12th century. He is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church and is celebrated locally in the diocese on March 29, with his own personal feast day, unlike most other canonized bishops who are celebrated collectively on January 20. Little information is known about his life. He entered religious life in the Order of Saint Augustine at the Priory of Saint-Hilaire-de-la-Celle, where he became prior. Renowned for his integrity and great piety, he was elected bishop in 1184 by the unanimous vote of the clergy and the people following the death of his predecessor, John aux Belles Mains. He defended the rights of the clergy against secular lords, which apparently earned him persecution, though the details are unknown. He also dedicated himself to reviving the faith of the laity. His death was followed by miracles. He was buried in the Church of Saint-Cyprien.
