Biography

Józef (Markowa, March 2, 1900 – Markowa, March 24, 1944) and Wiktoria Ulma (Markowa, December 10, 1912 – Markowa, March 24, 1944) were a Polish Catholic couple from Markowa, Poland, who attempted to save Jewish families during the German occupation in World War II by hiding them in their home. Upon being discovered, they were executed along with their children on March 24, 1944. The couple is recognized as Righteous Among the Nations in Israel, and on September 10, 2023, they were beatified by the Catholic Church along with their seven children. Despite the murders, which were perpetrated to intimidate the villagers and dissuade them from assisting Jews, the residents continued to hide fugitives until the end of the conflict. At least twenty-one Polish Jews survived in Markowa throughout the events.
