Biography
Victor of Agaunum (born 3rd century, died c. 287–303 in Agaunum) was a Roman soldier of the legendary Theban Legion, a Christian martyr, and a saint of the Catholic Church. He is said to have suffered martyrdom by beheading during the decimation of the Legion in Agaunum (modern-day Saint-Maurice, Switzerland) during the joint reign of Diocletian and Maximian, who persecuted Christians. Together with him, others who died for their faith in Jesus Christ included Maurice, Exuperius, Candidus, Innocent, and Vitalis, along with approximately 6,000 other soldiers. Victor of Agaunum is identified with Victor of Xanten and Victor of Solothurn. Because the name Victor (Latin for "conqueror") is used by several martyrs within the Theban Legion, it is presumed that it may encompass various versions of the same cult in the context of "conquerors for Christ." The liturgical memorial of Saint Victor, as well as the other martyrs of Agaunum, is celebrated on September 22.
