Saint Wddyn

Saint Wddyn

Biography

Wddyn was a 5th-century saint. There is a strong tradition that she was a giantess who used to travel over the mountains to visit Melangell. She founded Llanwddyn, which is now submerged under the Vyrnwy reservoir. When the village was rebuilt further down the valley, the new church was dedicated to Saint Wddyn. This is likely the only example of an Anglican church retaining the name of a local saint when dedicating a new building.
