Feast day: January 22

Biography

Blessed Walter of Bierbeek (Bierbeek – Himmerode, 1224) was a son of the then-lord Walter I of Bierbeek. In his youth, Walter was likely a squire to Duke Henry I of Brabant and participated in the failed Third Crusade (1189–1192). Disillusioned, Walter returned to Bierbeek and later entered the Cistercian monastery at Himmerode (near Trier) as a lay brother and monk. His feast day is January 22.
