Biography

Saint Virila (Basque: Birila; c. 870 – 950) was a Benedictine monk and abbot of the Monastery of San Salvador de Leyre in Navarre, venerated as a popular saint in the Catholic Church. He was possibly born in Tiermas, in the ancient Kingdom of Pamplona, and is remembered for the legend linking him to the mystery of eternity. His feast day is celebrated on October 1 in some regions and October 3 in others. He appears in historical documents from the year 928 and is considered a local devotional figure.
