Biography

Vincent of El Bierzo or of Montes (Kingdom of León?, second half of the 9th century – San Pedro de Montes, after 919) was a Benedictine monk and abbot of the monastery of San Pedro de Montes, near Ponferrada, in the region of El Bierzo. A Benedictine monk, in 908 he succeeded Saint Gennadius of Astorga as abbot of San Pedro de Montes, working actively on its reconstruction, completing major renovations, and consecrating the church. He was likely one of the companions who arrived at Montes in 895 from the Ageum monastery in Ayoó de Vidriales (province of Zamora). San Pedro de Montes was in ruins at the time, and the community worked to restore it, adopting the Rule of Saint Benedict. Due to the holiness of his life, he was buried in the monastery church of Montes.
