Saint Theodoros of Edessa

800–900 · Medieval

Feast day: July 19

Biography

Theodore of Edessa, or Theodore the Great Ascetic, is the supposed author of a corpus of Greek-language Christian religious literature, part of which appears in the Philokalia of the Neptic Fathers. This author is traditionally identified with the hero of a medieval hagiography, the Life of Theodore of Edessa, which is presented as the work of his nephew Basil, Bishop of Emesa (or Manbij). Theodore of Edessa is a saint commemorated on July 9 or 19 by the Orthodox Church and on December 27 by the Catholic Church.
