Saint Éterne d'Évreux
Biography
Saint Eternus, or Æternus in Latin, was a bishop of Évreux in Normandy. He is known to us through his successor, Saint Aquilin, who bestowed upon him the modest title of beatus. Mentioned by Robert of Torigni as one of the bishops of Évreux, he did not have a place in the diocese's calendar during the Middle Ages. No church in or around Évreux has taken him as its patron. Writings about his life began with Claude de Sainctes around 1583. However, no precise historical source currently allows for the clarification of his life or martyrdom, nor for the establishment of a certain connection between him and the saint venerated in Luzarches and Villiers-le-Bel. His death occurred around 670. He is commemorated on July 21 in the Diocese of Évreux.
