Saint Teodosio de Auxerre
Feast day: July 17
Biography
Theodosius (died July 17, 6th century, in Auxerre) was Bishop of Auxerre in the first half of the 6th century. He is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church. The Diocese of Auxerre preserves an ancient text, the Gesta pontificum Autissiodorensium, which dates to the end of the 9th century and is composed in the style of the Liber pontificalis of the Church of Rome. In this text, Theodosius appears 12th in the list of bishops of this ancient diocese, between bishops Ursus and Gregory. Historically, Theodosius is documented on two occasions. On July 10, 511, he was among the participants of the Council of Orléans, held under the presidency of Cyprian of Bordeaux. Around the same period, he was a recipient, along with Leo of Sens and Heraclius of Paris, of a letter from Saint Remigius of Reims, who rebuked them for criticizing his attitude toward a priest he had ordained. According to the Gesta, Theodosius governed the Church of Auxerre for 8 years and 28 days, died at the age of 75 on July 17, and was buried in the Church of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre. His name is commemorated on the same date in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum. In 1634, the Bishop of Auxerre, Dominique Séguier, conducted an examination of the saint's remains preserved in the crypt of Saint-Germain. The current Roman Martyrology, reformed in accordance with the decrees of the Second Vatican Council, commemorates the holy bishop on July 17 with these words:
