Saint Teigiwg ach Ynyr

Biography

Teigiwg is referred to as a 6th-century saint. She was the daughter of Madryn and Ynyr Gwent. Teigiwg fell in love with a young carpenter who came from Aberffraw to Caerwent to work on a mansion there. When the carpenter returned to Aberffraw, Teigiwg went with him, taking her dowry of horses, gold, and silver. The carpenter did not love Teigiwg and abandoned her in a lonely area along the road. Shepherds found her and cared for her. When her family in Caerwent heard, her brother, Iddon, went to search for her. When he found her, she decided to settle in a church near Trawsfynydd rather than return with him to Caerwent. Iddon went to the Court of Aberffraw to reclaim the horses, gold, and silver from the carpenter. The chieftain of Aberffraw was initially unwilling to assist, but a local saint succeeded in persuading him to change his mind.
