Biography
Saint Stephen Nguyễn Văn Vinh (Vietnamese: Stêphanô Nguyễn Văn Vinh) (born c. 1813 in Bồ Trang, Vietnam – died December 19, 1839, in Cổ Mễ, Bắc Ninh province, Vietnam) was a Dominican tertiary, martyr, and saint of the Catholic Church. Stephen Nguyễn Văn Vinh came from a poor family. At the time of his arrest during the persecutions, he was a catechumen. He was arrested alongside the Dominican Peter Nguyễn Văn Tự, the catechists Joseph Hoàng Lương Cảnh, Dominic Bùi Văn Úy, and Francis Xavier Hà Trọng Mậu, as well as two other Catholics: Augustine Nguyễn Văn Mới and Thomas Nguyễn Văn Đệ. Despite being tortured, Stephen Nguyễn Văn Vinh refused to trample on the cross. Shortly before his death, he received baptism and became a Dominican tertiary. He was martyred in prison on December 19, 1839. His feast day is November 24, as part of the group of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs. He was beatified on May 27, 1900, by Leo XIII and canonized by John Paul II on June 19, 1988, as one of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs.
