Biography

Speus of Nursia (born in Norcia, Umbria, Italy, 5th century; died there c. 517) was an abbot of a monastery he founded near that city around 450. For 40 years he was blind, enduring that disability in an extraordinary manner. His story is recounted by Pope Gregory I in the book Dialogues, chapter 15. Since ancient times, he has been venerated by Catholics and Orthodox as a saint. His feast day is celebrated on May 23.
