Biography

Saint Severinus of Paris (c. 540) was a hermit who lived in Paris during the 6th century. Drawn to the contemplative life, he spent much of his time enclosed in a cell on the banks of the Seine, praying and meditating. His example attracted many Parisians, who became his disciples and took him as a model of devotion, piety, and humility. Saint Cloud was one of them. He is buried at the site of his hermitage, which became the Church of Saint-Séverin in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. His feast day is November 23, though he was formerly listed in the Roman Martyrology and celebrated on November 27: Lutetiae Parisiorum depositio sancti Severini, Monachi et Solitarii (Deposition of Saint Severinus, monk and hermit in Paris).
