Saint Senario di Avranches

Feast day: September 18

Biography

Senario (died Avranches, 6th century) was a bishop of the Diocese of Avranches in the 6th century, venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church. Almost nothing is known about this holy bishop. The oldest episcopal catalogues of Avranches place five saints at the beginning of the episcopal series: Leontius, Paternus, Sinerius (also called Senator), Severus, and Authbertus. Of these, only Paternus and Aubert can be chronologically situated. Furthermore, the traditions that identify Senario as a bishop of Avranches are late (15th century), and the authors themselves place his episcopate differently, in a time frame ranging from the mid-6th century to the second thirty years of the 7th century. The current Roman Martyrology, reformed according to the decrees of the Second Vatican Council, commemorates the holy bishop on September 18 with these words:
