Biography
Saint Demetrius the New, or Saint Demetrius of Basarabov, is an Orthodox saint of Bulgarian origin, the patron saint of Bucharest and Wallachia. He was born in the 13th century (though other sources place his birth in the 15th century, and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church synaxarion in the 17th century) in the village of Basarabovo, Bulgaria. It is believed that he was initially a shepherd, later becoming a monk and entering a monastery located near his native village. The saint's relics were deposited in the Patriarchal Cathedral of Bucharest in the 18th century. The Romanian Orthodox Church and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church celebrate his feast day on October 27.
