Biography
Potamia was a Spanish saint who died around 597. According to Saint Braulio, she was educated under the guidance of Saint Emilian. Saint Citonatus, Saint Gerontius, and Saint Sophronius were also his disciples alongside her. Upon the death of her master, she retired to live as a hermit in the mountains of La Rioja, abandoning the aristocratic life she had previously led. Many years after her death, her remains were interred in the Church of San Salvador in Santurtzi, and were later transferred to the Monastery of San Millán de Suso. A beautiful polychrome sculpture of her is currently located at the Monastery of San Millán de Yuso. In the vicinity of San Millán de la Cogolla, there is an 18th-century Baroque hermitage dedicated to the saint. Her feast day is celebrated in January. She should not be confused with other saints of the same name whose feast days are celebrated on April 15 and July 30.
