Biography
Pierre-Jacques-Marie Vitalis (born 1759 in Carpentras, died September 2, 1792, in Saint-Germain-des-Prés) was a French Catholic priest and blessed. After his ordination, he served as a parish priest from 1784 to 1785 and later became a vicar at Saint-Méry. He continued his ministry in the Diocese of Paris. As the persecution of Catholics intensified during the French Revolution, he was imprisoned in 1792 at the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. He was killed by a mob during the September Massacres, which had previously murdered prisoners being transported from the town hall to the abbey. In the Catholic Church, he is commemorated on the anniversary of his death. Pierre-Jacques-Marie Vitalis was beatified by Pope Pius XI on October 17, 1926, along with 190 other French martyrs.
