Saint Philip of Heraclea

Biography

Saint Philip, Bishop of Heraclea in Thrace, was a 4th-century Christian martyr who died during the Diocletianic Persecution. Philip, a venerable elder, suffered martyrdom alongside two of his disciples, Saint Severus, a priest, and Saint Hermes, a deacon. When the persecution was announced, many advised the holy bishop to flee the city, but he would not leave the church, continuing to instruct and encourage the faithful without ceasing. Near the feast of the Epiphany, an official of the governor arrived at the church, inventoried its contents, and placed his seal on the building, particularly the door, to prevent it from being opened. Seeing the faithful distressed, Saint Philip consoled them, saying of the persecutors: these frivolous and foolish people imagine that God dwells more in walls than in the hearts of men.
