Biography

Peter Yu Chong-nyul (Korean: 유정률 베드로) was a Korean Christian layman, Catholic martyr, and saint. He was born in 1836 in Nonje, near Pyongyang, Korea, and died in prison for his faith on February 17, 1866, in Pyongyang. Recognized as a martyr and beatified in 1968 by Pope Paul VI, he was solemnly canonized in Seoul by John Paul II on May 6, 1984, along with a group of 102 other Korean martyrs. Saint Peter Yu Chong-nyul is commemorated on February 17 and September 20.
