Feast day: December 24

Biography

Nicholas the Monk was a Byzantine military commander, clergyman, and Christian saint. According to his later hagiographies, he served as a commander under Emperor Nikephoros I Genikos. During a war against the Bulgarians, an angel appeared to him and revealed that, due to his righteousness, he would survive an upcoming battle that would result in a crushing defeat for the emperor. After this prophecy came to pass, Nicholas became a monk. His feast day is celebrated on December 24 (January 6, Old Style).
