Venerable Mother Marcelina de San José

Luisa Aveledo, in religion Sister Marcelina of Saint Joseph, born in Caracas, Venezuela, on June 18, 1874, and died in Barranquilla, Colombia, on November 16, 1959, was a Venezuelan religious sister. Initially a member of the Little Sisters of the Poor of Maiquetía, she chose to continue serving the poor rather than follow the new directions of her order. With ecclesiastical approval, she founded a new congregation in service to the destitute, the Little Sisters of the Poor of Saint Peter Claver. Particularly devoted to the poor and the elderly, she is recognized as venerable by the Catholic Church. Her feast day is November 16.
