Saint Mikael Ulumboeli

Biography

Michael of Ulumbo is a Georgian saint whose feast day is celebrated on May 3 according to the Old Style, or May 16 according to the New Style. The saint was a contemporary of Patriarch Sergius of Jerusalem (842–844). The agape records of the Monastery of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem mention "our holy fathers Michael and Arsenius, who built Ulumbo." It appears that Arsenius and Michael laid the foundations for Georgian monasticism at Ulumbo. The Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Georgia has canonized the venerable fathers Michael and Arsenius as the founders of the Georgian monastery at Ulumbo.
