Venerable Mercury of Smolensk

Mercury of Smolensk, also known as Mercurius of Smolensk (date and place of birth unknown; according to tradition, he died on November 24, 1239, in Smolensk), was a legendary saint of the Orthodox Church, a martyr, and a hero of the battles against the Mongols during their invasion of Rus'. The historicity of the saint is not confirmed, though several versions of his life exist.
