Saint Maximus of Riez
Feast day: November 27
Biography
Maximus of Riez, who died around 460, was a churchman considered to be the first bishop of Riez. He was appointed to this office in 433 or 434 and remained there until his death around 460. His life is known to us through two main sources: the panegyric sermon entitled Sermo de sancto Maximo episcopo (BHL 5852), composed by his successor Faustus of Riez, and the Vita sancti Maximi episcopi Reiensis (BHL 5853), written between 592 and 595 by Dynamius the Patrician. Despite their hagiographic nature, these two documents allow for a reconstruction of his career with some probability.
