Blessed Mary the Miserable

1270–1290 · Medieval

Feast day: June 18

Biography

Maria Dolorosa (Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe, c. 1270 – ibid., June 18, 1290) is a Brabantine blessed who is known in popular devotion as Lenneke Mare, which is said to be a corruption of Alleyndiger Maria. The translation of "ellendige" (wretched) caused headaches for Latinists: she was usually referred to as Maria Miserabilis (French: Marie-la-Misérable), but sometimes also as Maria Dolorosa (French: Marie-la-Douloureuse). Her feast day is June 18.
