Saint Martirià d'Albenga
250–301 · Early Church
Biography
Martirià (Florence, mid-4th century – Albenga, late 4th century) was a bishop of Albenga who is venerated today as the patron saint of the town of Banyoles. His historicity is doubtful, however, as the first documented bishop of the Diocese of Albenga dates to the year 451, and none of the known bishops bore the name Martirià or that of his supposed predecessor, Junci. He may be a legendary hagiographic figure created, like many others, during the Early Middle Ages to justify the existence of the relics in Banyoles and provide them with their own legend.
