Biography

Saint Macarius the Protopsaltes (born 1763, Lunca Corbului, Wallachia – died August 30, 1836, Viforâta Monastery, Dâmbovița, Romania) was a Romanian hieromonk, protopsaltes, translator, and theorist of Byzantine chant in Wallachia, considered one of the founders of Romanian Byzantine music in modern notation. He played a major role in the introduction and dissemination of the new method of Byzantine notation in the Romanian lands and in the translation of the Byzantine repertoire into Romanian. He was canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 2023 and is commemorated on August 31.
