Biography
Blessed Luis Magaña Servín (born in Arandas, Jalisco, August 24, 1902 – died in Arandas, Jalisco, February 9, 1928) was the eldest son of Raimundo Magaña Zúñiga and María Concepción Servín, and brother to Delfino and José Soledad. His family owned a tannery where they produced saddles, huaraches, shoes, and leather goods. A quiet Christian, he frequented the sacraments during his adolescence. He was a member of the Catholic Workers of Saint Mary of Guadalupe in Arandas, the Mexican Catholic Youth Association (ACJM), and the Archconfraternity of the Nocturnal Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at the Arandas parish. He worked with his parents in the tannery, which required him to travel frequently to Atotonilco. A committed layman, he kept his Catholic convictions alive, refusing to deny them even during the trials and persecution of the Cristero War led by the government of Plutarco Elías Calles. He was executed by firing squad on February 9, 1928. He was beatified on November 20, 2005.
