Biography

Lucia Yun Un-hye (born in Hangamgae, Korea; died May 14, 1801, in Seoul) was a Korean martyr and a blessed of the Catholic Church. Lucia Yun Un-hye was born in Hangamgae in Gyeonggi Province, Korea. At a young age, she was introduced to the catechism by her mother. She married Barnabas Jeong Gwang-su, and in 1799, the couple moved to Pyŏktong County. There, they practiced their religion and assisted in church activities by establishing a meeting place for Catholics, teaching the catechism, and distributing religious books and images to the faithful. Following the arrest of her older sister, Agatha Yun Jeom-hye, during the anti-Catholic persecutions of 1801, Lucia went into hiding. She was arrested in February 1801. Because she refused to renounce her faith, she was sentenced to death and executed by beheading on May 14, 1801, at the execution site outside the Small West Gate in Seoul. Other Catholics were executed alongside her, including Peter Choe Pil-je, Candida Jeong Bok-hye, Thaddeus Jeong In-hyeok, and Charles Jeong Cheol-sang. She was beatified as part of the group of 124 Korean martyrs by Pope Francis on August 16, 2014. Her feast day is celebrated on May 31 with the group of 124 Korean martyrs.
