Biography

Paul Gabriel Dochier, better known by his religious name Brother Luc, born on January 31, 1914, in Bourg-de-Péage (Drôme) and murdered on April 20, 1996, was one of the seven monks of Tibhirine killed during the Algerian Civil War of 1993–2000, a conflict that claimed 200,000 lives. The fate of these Trappist monks inspired the 2010 Cannes Film Festival award-winning film Of Gods and Men, in which he is portrayed by Michael Lonsdale. Included among the martyrs of Algeria, he was beatified on December 8, 2018.
