Biography

León Inchausti, O.A.R. (born June 27, 1859, in Ajánguiz, Biscay; died July 25, 1936, in Motril) was a blessed of the Catholic Church and a priest of the Order of Augustinian Recollects. He entered the Augustinian order in 1878. On June 1, 1884, he was transferred to Manila in the Philippines, where he was ordained a priest on December 22, 1884. The outbreak of the anti-Spanish revolution interrupted his apostolate and forced him to return to Spain in 1898. From 1903 to 1921, he conducted missionary work in Brazil. After returning to Spain, he worked in Granada, Bilbao (in 1927), and Motril (from 1928). During the Spanish Civil War, fully aware of the danger, he remained in Motril. On the day of his death, he was forcibly taken from the monastery by the militia into the street and executed by firing squad along with four of his confreres. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II as part of the group of eight martyrs of Motril, victims killed "in hatred of the faith."
