Biography
Justinian was the first bishop of Valencia of whom there is historical record, living during the time of Theudis, King of the Visigoths. He was abbot of the monastery that stood around the tomb of Saint Vincent the Martyr. He was consecrated bishop in Toledo by Montanus around 527. He is known to have convened a synod or council in Valencia, which was attended by seven bishops. He is the same Justin who subscribed to the Council of Valencia in 546, the fifteenth year of the reign of Theudis. He had three brothers who were also bishops: Nebridius of Egara, bishop of Egara (modern-day Terrassa); Justus, bishop of Urgell; and Elpidius, likely prelate of Huesca. He wrote the book titled Responsionum ad quemdam Rusticum, concerning various questions: first, on the Holy Spirit; second, against the Bonosians who claim Christ is adoptive and not proper; third, on the baptism of Christ, which may not be repeated; fourth, on the distinction between the baptism of John and that of Christ; and fifth, that the Son, like the Father, is invisible.
