Biography
Saint John the Baptist Đinh Văn Thanh (Vietnamese: Gioan Baotixta Đinh Văn Thanh) (born c. 1796 in Nôn Khê, Ninh Bình province, Vietnam – died April 28, 1840, in Ninh Bình, Vietnam) was a catechist, martyr, and saint of the Catholic Church. In 1837, John the Baptist Đinh Văn Thanh was arrested along with Father Paul Phạm Khắc Khoan and the catechist Peter Nguyễn Văn Hiếu. Despite being tortured, John the Baptist Đinh Văn Thanh could not be persuaded to renounce his faith. They were beheaded on April 28, 1840. His feast day is celebrated in the Catholic Church on the anniversary of his death, and he is commemorated as part of the group of 117 Vietnamese Martyrs on November 24. He was beatified on May 27, 1900, by Leo XIII and canonized by John Paul II on June 19, 1988, as one of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs.
