Biography

Saint Isidore of Alexandria (from the Greek Ἰσίδωρος, literally "gift of Isis") was an Egyptian saint born around 318 and died around 404. Of Greek origin, he was a monk and ascetic known as the Hospitaller, and an anchorite in the Thebaid. He was confirmed by Saint Athanasius and placed in charge of a hospital for travelers and the poor, from which he derived his nickname. He had confrontations with the Arians. He came into conflict with the Patriarch of Alexandria, Theophilus of Alexandria, joined the Origenist monks in the Nitrian Desert, and accompanied their leaders to Constantinople to seek the help of John Chrysostom. His feast day is commemorated on January 15.
