Biography

Hademunda (also spelled Gademunda, Gadamuda, Gadamuta, Gadamwoda; born Ebersberg near Munich, Bavaria; died November 11, 1029, Jerusalem) was a Catholic saint and pilgrim. Hademunda was the daughter of Count Adalbero of Ebersberg and the sister of Count Ulrich. She was raised in piety and the fear of God and married Margrave Markwart of Carinthia. Following the early death of her husband, she distributed all her possessions and set out for Jerusalem as a simple, impoverished pilgrim. There, she lived a righteous life and died on November 11, 1029. According to tradition, many miracles occurred at her grave. Upon learning of his sister's death, her elderly brother Ulrich prepared to travel to Jerusalem as well, but he was dissuaded from undertaking such a long and dangerous journey at his advanced age. Her feast day is November 11.
