Biography
Gyaviira Musoke (died Namugongo, June 3, 1886) was one of the 22 Catholic martyrs known and venerated worldwide as the Uganda Martyrs. They were pages at the royal court of the Kabaka of Buganda, Mwanga II (1884–1903), who were killed between November 15, 1885, and January 27, 1887, for their faith in Jesus Christ following the preaching of the Gospel by the Missionaries of Africa, who were organized by Cardinal Charles Lavigerie. They are the first martyrs from sub-Saharan Africa to be venerated as saints by the Catholic Church. Their feast day is celebrated on June 3.
