Biography

Gwawr was a 6th-century saint and one of the 24 daughters of King Brychan of Ceredigion and his wife, Prawst ferch Tudwal. She may also have been referred to by the names Goddeu, Saint Gwrygon, and Gwrugon. It is said that she married Elidir Lydanwyn ap Meirchion, King of Rheged, and that they had two children: Helydd ferch Elidir and Llywarch Hen ab Elidir, a member of the royal family of Rheged in the Hen Ogledd and a poet. There is a record stating she was born in Manaw Gododdin (now in Scotland), but it is more likely that she moved there. She had many sisters or half-sisters, including: Arianwen, Rhiangar, Gwladys, Gwrgon, Nefydd, Lleian, Marchell, Meleri, Nefyn, Tutglid, Belyau, Ceinwen, Cynheiddon, Ceindrych, Clydai, Dwynwen, Eiluned, Goleudydd, Gwen, Ilud, Tybïe, Tudful, and Tangwystl.
