Biography

Guthago is the name of a saint associated with missionary work in the coastal region of West Flanders. Guthago is said to have been a Scottish prince by birth. What is known about him consists of legends. The exact period in which he lived is not known, with dates ranging from the 6th to the 9th century. He is said to have been buried in Oostkerke, and legend tells that his companion, a certain Gillon, did not want to leave him even after his death and founded a hermitage by his grave. Miracles are said to have occurred at this grave, leading to the construction of a chapel, and later a church, on the site, of which the current Saint Quintinus Church is the successor. Guthago was canonized in 1159. His feast day is July 3.
