Biography

Saint Walter was a Franciscan friar sent on a mission to Portugal in the early 13th century by Saint Francis of Assisi. Every year on the first weekend of August, the city of Guimarães dedicates its city festival, known as the Gualterian Festivals, to him. Although he is not the patron saint of the city—a title held by Our Lady of Oliveira—he is a saint who gained the devotion of the people of Guimarães over time, largely due to the miracles attributed to him.
