Saint Gregory of Assos
Feast day: March 4
Biography
Saint Gregory, Bishop of Assos, is a saint of the Orthodox Christian Church who served as bishop in Assos, a diocese of the Metropolis of Ephesus. He was born to pious parents in the village of Akorni Geras, in the present-day rural area of Kourkouta on Lesbos, and died at an advanced age on Mount Priantos (Prigiami) on Lesbos in 1150 or 1185 AD. The translation of the holy relics of Saint Gregory, Bishop of Assos, took place in 1935–1936, approximately 750 years later. Following a proposal by the Metropolitan of Mytilene, the Ecumenical Patriarchate designated the first Sunday after November 10 as the feast day for the translation of the saint's relics, which is celebrated annually with great solemnity. The memory of the saint is commemorated on March 4 of each year.
