Biography

Gregorio Escobar García, OMI (born September 12, 1912, in Estella; died November 28, 1936, in Paracuellos de Jarama) was a Spanish Oblate of the Immaculate Mary. He made his first vows in the Oblate congregation on August 15, 1930. Subsequently, he lived at the Oblate house of studies in Pozuelo, where he completed his education. In 1934, he was forced to interrupt his studies for military service, but he was able to profess his perpetual vows on November 26, 1935. He was ordained a priest in Madrid on June 6, 1936. During the Spanish Civil War, he and his confreres were arrested by armed militias at the Oblate monastery in Pozuelo on July 22, 1936, but were released three days later. He was imprisoned again on October 15 of that same year and was executed on November 28, 1936, along with twelve of his confreres. The beatification of the 22 Spanish Oblate martyrs, including Gregorio Escobar García, took place on December 17, 2011, at the Cathedral of Madrid.
