Blessed Gezelinus von Schlebusch
1100–1200 · Medieval · Cistercians
Biography
Gezelinus of Schlebusch (born in the Duchy of Burgundy; died 12th century, presumably in Schlebuschrath, now a district of Leverkusen-Alkenrath) was, according to legend, a lay brother (conversus) at the Cistercian monastery in Altenberg. He became known during his lifetime for his humble life as a shepherd in Schlebuschrath, and after his death, a regionally significant cult developed around him and his legend. Local believers referred to Gezelinus as "Blessed" as early as 1524. While a formal beatification by a Cologne auxiliary bishop cannot be documented, Gezelin is recognized by the Catholic Church as beatified.
