Biography

Gerold of Cologne (died 1241) was a pilgrim commemorated as a martyr by the Catholic Church. A native of Germany, he dedicated his life to pilgrimages to holy sites of devotion. He traveled to Rome along the famous Via Francigena and to the shrine of Saint James of Compostela. He was killed while crossing the Alps, when he was attacked by bandits who abandoned his body. It was recovered by devout locals who brought him to Cremona, where he was buried with full honors. According to Cremonese tradition, Saint Gerold (from Cologne, though some sources suggest Constance) was attacked and killed near the Po River, close to the gate known as Mosa in Cremona. His body was translated to the church of Santa Maria Maddalena on Via XI Febbraio in Cremona. A precious altar has been dedicated to Saint Gerold.
