Saint Filadelfo di Pattano

Biography

Philadelphus of Pattano (fl. 9th–10th century) was the first hegumen of the Italo-Greek monastery of Santa Maria di Pattano (a hamlet of Vallo della Lucania). A church dedicated to him, dating to the late 10th century, stands on the site of the fortified monastic citadel. A late 10th-century wooden statue, currently housed at the Diocesan Museum of Vallo della Lucania, depicts a saintly monk—the first hegumen of the Abbey of Pattano—dressed in traditional Byzantine monastic attire. It serves as a sort of icon of the genius loci, sculpted rather than painted, in accordance with Western trends. Before its transfer, the statue was located in the Church of Saint Philadelphus, which is part of the Italo-Greek monastery complex of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Pattano.
