Biography

Euphrasius of the Child Jesus, born Barredo Fernández (February 8, 1897, in Cancienes – October 12, 1934, in Oviedo), was a Discalced Carmelite and a blessed of the Catholic Church. After taking his religious vows in 1916, he began studies in theology and philosophy. He was ordained a priest in 1922 and subsequently assigned to work as a lecturer. From 1926 to 1928, he resided in Poland. Upon returning to Spain, he continued his teaching career and was elected prior of the Carmelite monastery in Oviedo in 1933. During the Civil War, he was captured and executed by firing squad. He was beatified in Rome on October 28, 2007, by Pope Benedict XVI as a member of a group of 498 martyrs.
