Biography
Emmanuel Lê Van Phung is one of the 117 Vietnamese martyrs canonized by John Paul II in 1988. A father of nine, a zealous Catholic, and a catechist, he sheltered Christian missionaries at the height of the religious persecution under the reign of Emperor Tu Duc (1847–1883). Arrested on January 7, 1859, he spent more than six months in prison before being executed on July 31, 1859.
