Saint Elliw ach Cadog

Biography

Elliw was a 6th-century saint and a great-granddaughter of Brychan Brycheiniog. Elliw is sometimes called a disciple of Saint Cadoc. She was also his heir, which suggests a blood relationship between them. The Vita Cadoci records how Cadoc visited an island where the chieftainess was barren. She asked for Cadoc's help, and according to the Vita, Cadoc succeeded in healing her "miraculously." The chieftainess gave birth to Elliw (she is called Elli and turned into a male in some versions of the story). She gave Elliw to Cadoc to be educated. She founded Llanelli. At Llaneleu near Brecon, the church is called Saint Elliw, but it is more likely that Eiluned founded the church there.
