Biography

Dominic Nguyen Van Hanh (Vietnamese: Đaminh Nguyễn Văn Hạnh; Nghệ An, 1772 – Ba Tòa, August 1, 1838) was a Vietnamese Dominican priest. He is venerated as a martyr and saint by the Catholic Church. He desired to be a priest at an early age. After being ordained, he became a Dominican in 1826. When persecution began, he went into hiding for some time. He was arrested in July 1838. He was tortured many times while attempts were made to force him to trample on a cross and a statue of the Virgin Mary. He was beheaded on August 1, 1838, along with Bernard Vu Van Due. He is venerated on November 24 as part of a group of 117 Vietnamese martyrs. He was beatified on May 27, 1900, by Leo XIII and canonized by John Paul II on June 19, 1988, among the 117 Vietnamese martyrs.
